Beat the Summer Heat: Essential Trailer Maintenance Tips for Peak Season

Summer is peak season across transport, construction, and agriculture. Long daylight hours mean non-stop operations, heavy payloads, and relentless road conditions.

Whether you are pulling a heavy-duty McCauley dump trailer on a busy site or moving heavy plant machinery on a MAC 3-axle stepframe, the summer heat puts massive stress on your gear. High temperatures, airborne dust, and heavy workloads can quickly turn minor wear and tear into costly downtime.

To keep your fleet moving safely and efficiently, here are the critical areas to monitor over the coming months.

1. Keep a Close Eye on Tyre Pressures

Tyres take a beating in the summer, and heat is their biggest enemy. Under-inflated tyres flex more, which generates excessive internal heat. When you combine that with blistering road surfaces and maximum payloads, you significantly increase the risk of a dangerous blowout.

What to do: Always check your pressures in the morning when the tyres are cold. While you're there, look out for uneven tread wear—this is usually an early warning sign of tracking issues or axle misalignment.

  • The McCauley Edge: We spec our trailers high-load-rated tyres. For our agricultural range, our heavy-duty flotation tyres are designed to distribute weight perfectly, protecting both the land from compaction and the tyre walls from premature wear.

2. Inspect Brakes and Pneumatic Systems

Heavy loads require maximum stopping power, especially when you're navigating dusty quarry lanes or steep rural drops. Frequent heavy braking builds up intense heat, which can lead to "brake fade" and reduced stopping efficiency. On top of that, summer dust easily infiltrates brake drums and slack adjusters, causing components to stick or wear out early.

What to do: Regularly clear out accumulated dust and debris from the brake assemblies. Check your brake lining thickness and inspect your air and hydraulic lines to ensure the sun hasn't made them brittle or cracked.

  • The McCauley Edge: McCauley trailers are engineered with premium axles. These systems are built to dissipate heat efficiently, giving you reliable stopping power even under full load.

3. Don't Skimp on Greasing

Dry, dusty summer conditions act like sandpaper on moving parts. Tipping rams, ramp hinges, suspension bushings, and hitch pivot points handle massive friction every day. Without a proper grease barrier, these components will score, seize up, or fail long before they should.

What to do: Turn up the frequency of your greasing schedule during peak season. Pay close attention to the mechanical pivot points on hydraulic ramps and the main tipping pins on dump trailers. Always wipe away old, grit-heavy grease before pumping in fresh, high-quality lubricant.

4. Check Your Electrics and Lighting

Constant vibration on dry, hard summer ground can easily rattle electrical connections loose, and road dust can quickly coat your lenses. Blown bulbs or loose wiring harnesses don't just leave you invisible to other drivers—they invite costly roadside penalties.

What to do: Make a quick walkaround part of your daily routine. Test all LED markers, indicators, and brake lights. Wipe down the lenses and check that your Suzie cables and plug connections are tight and free of corrosion.
